Tonight, all over Ireland, the bonfires are lit, the doorbell won't stop ringing, and the bangers have been going off since teatime. Halloween started here. Samhain was the night the old Celts believed the line between worlds wore thin. Two thousand years on, it's still one of the noisiest, darkest, busiest nights of the year.
For a lot of homes, it's also the emptiest.
An empty house on the darkest night
Mid-term break has families away. Others are out at parties, trick-or-treating with the kids, or at the bonfire till late. The clocks went back last Sunday, so it's dark before six.
A house with no lights on, no car in the drive and a bowl of sweets untouched on the step tells anyone passing exactly what they need to know.
Gardaí warn every year that burglaries climb once the evenings close in. Halloween gives a burglar the perfect cover: strangers on every path, noise to mask anything and everyone in a mask.
Spare a thought for the dog
Fireworks are illegal in Ireland without a licence, but nobody told the estate. For pets, tonight is the worst night of the year. Dogs bolt through hedges, cats vanish for days and a frightened animal alone in an empty house can hurt itself and wreck the place.
What actually helps:
• A familiar person in the house
• Curtains drawn, radio or TV on to soften the bangs
• A safe den they can hide in
• A long walk well before dark
• Microchip details up to date
• Doors and side gates checked twice
A camera on the kitchen counter can tell you your dog is panicking. It can't sit with him.
Lights on. Someone home.
Smart doorbells and timer switches have their place. But nothing puts off an opportunist like a real person: lights moving room to room, the car in the drive, someone answering the door, someone who notices when something isn't right.
That's what a house sitter is. Not a gadget. A presence.
