Dark Evenings Are Here. Is Your Home Ready?

Operation Thor's winter phase is under way. Here's what the latest Garda figures mean for homeowners, and how a trusted sitter helps.

On 1 October, An Garda Síochána launched the winter phase of Operation Thor, its annual anti-burglary drive. It runs until 31 March 2027.

First, the good news. Recorded residential burglaries have fallen since Operation Thor began in 2015.

Winter still brings real risk, though, and the numbers explain why:

Around 14 homes a day are still burgled across Ireland.
79% of burglaries happen between 4pm and 8am, in twilight and darkness.
In almost one in four winter burglaries, the burglar simply walked in through an unlocked door.
Burglaries can rise by up to 20% in winter, when daylight is shortest.

What the Gardaí recommend

The Garda Lock Up, Light Up advice is simple:

Turn on some lights, and use timers or motion sensors.
Lock every door and window, every time.
Use a house alarm.
Keep keys away from windows and doors.
Don't keep large amounts of cash or jewellery at home.
The one thing a timer can't do

Timers are useful, but they are predictable. A light that comes on at 6pm every night looks the same as no one home. What actually puts a burglar off is a real person living in the house: a car in the drive, curtains moving, a dog being walked, the bins going out on the right day.

A house sitter gives you that. Your home stays lived-in, your pets stay in their own routine, and you get peace of mind while you're away.

Every MindMyHome sitter is ID-verified before they're matched with a home.

Sitters: you're part of this too

If you're minding a home this winter, follow the same habits as the homeowner would:

Lock up whenever you step out, even for five minutes.
Leave a light on before dusk.
Bring in post and parcels.
Agree with the homeowner what to do if something looks wrong.

If you see anything suspicious, report it to the Gardaí. They stress that even small or attempted crimes help them build a fuller picture. In an emergency, call 999 or 112.
